This seven-day passage offers a rare opportunity to experience the desert at a generous, considered pace. Moving from Fes to Marrakech, the journey reveals layers of landscape and culture, with flexibility built into every stage.
We will meet you at your accommodation and begin our journey to Midelt via Meknes and Volubilis. Our first stop is the Roman city of Volubilis, where you can marvel at the remarkably preserved original mosaics, Roman roads, and city layout. As we traverse the Moroccan countryside, we'll pass by the Holy City of Moulay Idriss for a photo opportunity. Continuing to Meknes, another significant imperial city in Morocco, we'll explore its landmarks including the famous gate Bab Mansour, the Sahrij Souani Bassin, and the Mulay Ismail Mausoleum. In Meknes, you'll have the option to visit a vineyard for some wine tasting if you wish. If time permits, we'll journey via Ifrane, often referred to as the "Moroccan Switzerland," before crossing the Middle Atlas Mountains, admiring the views and passing through farmer's towns. If your visit coincides with a market day, we'll have the opportunity to explore them. Overnight stay in a villa or hotel.
Today, we'll head southeast following the Caravan routes to Merzouga. These routes were once used by camel traders to travel from the desert to Northern Morocco. Our journey will take us through the vast open high desert, with the scenery gradually transitioning as we approach Er Rachidia. Continuing along the lush Ziz Valley and the Tafilalet date palm grove, famous for date cultivation, we'll pass through areas significant to the Alaouite dynasty, the current ruling royal family in Morocco. Arriving in Merzouga in the afternoon, we'll embark on a guided camel ride into the sand sea of Erg Chebbi. Overnight at a desert luxury camp.
Start your day with a memorable sunrise experience before breakfast at the camp. We'll then return to the village of Merzouga, taking in the unique beauty of the Erg Chebbi sand dunes as we journey back. Today's itinerary is focused on learning about the region, with visits to the Gnawa people to experience their music and lifestyle, the lake of Merzouga to observe bird populations, and the souk in Rissani, a traditional town known for its significance in Moroccan history and trade. At the end of the afternoon, enjoy a glass of mint tea before checking in to a Riad or Dar.
We'll depart for Rissani, Tinghir, and Todra Gorges, the highest and narrowest gorges in Morocco. A guided walk along the Valley will provide insights into local culture, and you'll have the opportunity to visit a local family for some mint tea. Continuing via Tamtatocuhe and the High Atlas Mountains, we'll arrive in Imilchil, a small Berber village known for its strict social norms around courtship and marriage. Overnight accommodation at a small Dar or hotel.
After breakfast, we'll explore the twin lakes of Isli and Tilsit, famous for the legend of Aït Yaaza and Aït Ibrahim. We'll then journey to Dades Valley via Agoudal and Mesmrir, stopping at different villages along the way to admire the stunning views. Drive through the Dades Valley to see the majestic sand castles and rock formations known as "monkey toes." Overnight at a beautiful Dar or hotel.
Leaving the impressive Dades Valley, we'll travel towards Ouarzazate, passing through the way of the thousand kasbahs in Dades Valley, providing numerous opportunities for photography. We'll stop at Kalaa Mgouna, "the rose city," to purchase rosewater. Continuing to Skoura and the birds valley, we can visit the Kasbah Ameridil if desired.
