4 Day Desert Tour: From Marrakech to Fes via the Sahara

With four days to unfold, this route allows for a more measured transition between Marrakech and Fes, revealing the desert’s scale while preserving time for discovery along the way.

Tour Plan :

01
Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas Mountains – Ait Ben Haddou – Skoura - Dades Valley

We will pick you up at your riad and set off to cross the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi-n-Tichka Pass – at 2260m (7417ft) it’s the highest pass in Morocco. Enjoy amazing views of this fascinating landscape and the Berber villages it contains, and see the Telouet Kasbah, which was once a residence of the pasha of Marrakesh.

Continuing south we arrive at the Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou, probably the most celebrated, filmed, and photographed Kasbah in Morocco. Featured in numerous films (including Lawrence of Arabia, The Sheltering Sky and Gladiator), it is the best-preserved Kasbah in Morocco and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Continuing on to Ouarzazate, you will have the opportunity to explore the world-famous Atlas Film Studios and the Taourirt Kasbah.

Travelling along the Thousand Kasbah’s Road, we arrive at Dades Gorge where you will stay overnight in a wonderful property overlooking the valley.

02
Day 2: Dades Valley – Todra Gorges – Rissani – Merzouga – Desert

We take the road to Merzouga through the Todra Gorge, a narrow corridor with sheer cliffs 300m (985ft) high rising up dramatically each side. These are the most impressive cliffs in southern Morocco and they are well known to experienced mountaineers. In Todra Valley you will have a panoramic view of the surrounding area containing old mud kasbahs.

If time permits and you're inclined to explore by foot, an optional hike awaits you within the valley. Immerse yourself in the local culture and geography as you meet with friendly locals in their fields, offering an enriching experience of authentic Morocco.

Passing through villages like Tinjdad, Mallaab and Touroug we arrive in Merzouga in the late afternoon to be welcomed by your camel guide who will take you across the sand dunes to your luxurious desert camp. Immerse yourself in the magic of the desert at Erg Chebbi. Enjoy an unforgettable evening with dinner, campfire, and local music. Spend the night under canvas or beneath the stars, if weather permits. Your camp offers modern comforts like Western bathrooms and hot showers for your convenience.

03
Day 3: Merzouga Region & Desert Exploring Day

In the early morning, you might want to wake up to witness what could be the most breathtaking sunrise of your life. After enjoying breakfast at your camp, you'll peacefully return to the village of Merzouga. As you journey back over the dunes, take in the awe-inspiring beauty of the Erg Chebbi sand dunes, which transform with the changing light throughout the day.

Following your return, embark on an explorative journey of the area. Visit nomadic families in their traditional goat hair tents and gain insights into desert life. Then, immerse yourself in the culture and music of the Gnaoua people, descendants of Sudanese slaves, and learn about their unique way of life.

Depending on the season, you may also have the opportunity to visit the picturesque Merzouga Lake, home to a diverse bird population, including flamingos. Finally, check in to your riad in the village and enjoy an overnight stay, surrounded by the charm of this desert oasis.

Day 4: Merzouga - Ziz Valley - Midlet - Azrou – Ifrane - Fes

After enjoying a leisurely breakfast, you'll bid farewell to the Sahara Desert and begin your journey to Fes via the scenic Ziz Valley and Azrou. Along the way, you'll be captivated by the stunning landscape, including the majestic Ziz Gorges, carved through volcanic rock, and the winding roads of the Tizi n’ Talghamt Pass leading to Midelt. For those interested in fossils, there's an opportunity to visit one of the local workshops today.

As you traverse the High Atlas and Middle Atlas Mountains, be sure to make a stop at the Cedar Forest, where you can observe Barbary apes in their natural habitat. Your journey continues through Ifrane, often likened to the Switzerland of Morocco, before arriving in Fes by early evening.

Here, your enriching travel experience with Deep Morocco Tours comes to a close, leaving you with lasting memories of your Moroccan adventure.
